Pyford Brook Quarry

Staffordshire is an important source of sand and gravel for the construction industry.

The county has resources of hard rock sand and gravel as well as superficial sand and gravel deposits typically located in river valleys.

Alrewas Quarry, a sand and gravel quarry located to the east of the A38, has been operated by Tarmac (and its predecessors) since the 1970s. However, the remaining reserves at Alrewas are anticipated to be exhausted by 2028, and no more extension options are available at the site.

Alrewas Quarry has the ability to provide up to 750,000 tonnes of sand and gravel per annum that forms an important component of aggregate materials supply in the county.

We have therefore started reviewing our options to ensure that there remains a continuous supply of sand and gravel in the county.

Tarmac and Cemex are proposing to extend the existing sand and gravel operation at Pyford Brook Quarry, to the west of Alrewas, currently operated by Cemex. We have produced this website to update residents as the proposals progress.
